Diving In The Galapagos

written by Brenna Holeman September 12, 2012

The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
There are really no words, and the photos do not do the day justice. When you are surrounded by dozens of sharks, sea lions, turtles, schools of fish, and a 5-metre manta ray, when you are seeing one of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the world, when you cry from joy with your mask still on, when your heart nearly explodes out of your chest you’re so overwhelmed with the luck and the beauty in your life – it’s all worth it, every last penny and every last drop of sweat and every last second standing in line at immigration. It’s all worth it.

Amazing images.
I experienced a similar emotional experience in Hawaii. The school if fish and turtles were truly inspiring.
I am hoping to bring an underwater camera to Jamaica when I go. I love snorkelling but have yet to go scuba diving. This post is definitely an incentive!

Brenna,

I completely know the feeling. When reading your post it gave me the warm fuzzies just thinking about the amazing once in a lifetime experience I had spending the month of June in Sabah Borneo. I know those experiences can never be reproduced and you just have to bring yourself back to reality reminding yourself how lucky you are. I think every traveler has a one up on the rest of the population because you have these amazing experiences and see people, things and places that very few ever get the opportunity to.

Love your blog and I live vicariously through your adventures until my summer begins again, but at least I get the opportunity to share it all with others through my teaching career.

Best Wishes,
Kristi

Looks like an incredible diving experience. ;D That manta ray is massive! But is that a shark I saw?!

Murissa – If you felt that way about snorkelling, I’m sure you would love diving!

Kristi – Thank you so much for your nice comment! A month in Borneo?? Amazing…

Audrey – Yes, there were dozens of white-tipped and Galapagos sharks! I love seeing sharks when I dive…

Andi – Thank you 🙂

About Me

About Me

Hi, I'm Brenna

My name is Brenna Holeman and I drink a lot of whisky. No, wait. That’s not how I want to start. After travelling to more than 100 countries over the past 15 years, many of them solo, I tend to write about travel a lot, but I write about other things, too: getting dumped, buying way too much jewellery, and yeah, OK, whisky (none of those things are related, I swear). You’ll find a mix of advice, opinion pieces, and stories on this blog, but either way, I hope to make you want to read more. And up next? I'm about to become a single mom to a beautiful baby boy, the biggest solo adventure I've ever been on. For more about me and what you'll find on This Battered Suitcase, click here .

About Brenna

This Battered Suitcase is not only about the where and the how of travel, it's about the who and the why.

Originally from Canada, all I've ever wanted to do is travel. After eleven years of solo travel and over 90 countries, I'm currently living in London and fulfilling my other dream of becoming a writer. If I'm not travelling, I'm writing about it, either for my blog, my job, or my book. I firmly believe there is adventure everywhere, so long as you keep your eyes (and your mind, and your heart) open. Join me as I continue to look for these adventures. Hopefully you'll find your own, too.
