My 2018 Travel Goals

by Brenna Holeman

On one of my first trips of 2017, the North Coast 500 around Scotland

Last year I wrote a post that highlighted my 2017 travel goals. In it, I mentioned places like Jordan, Puerto Rico, Belgium, New York City, and an adventure around the Balkans. Well, unless I’m going to somehow travel to all of those places at warp-speed in the next two weeks, spoiler alert: I definitely did NOT accomplish the majority of my 2017 travel goals. In fact, of the thirteen trips I mentioned, I only achieved three of them.

But… wow, am I not complaining at all, because 2017 was still a pretty crazy year in terms of travel. In total, I spent about half the year in London, two months in Canada, and four months on the road (including Italy three times, Scotland, Denmark, Spain, Antigua and Barbuda, UAE, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Austria, San Marino, Germany, and Japan). As you can see, most of those places weren’t on the original 2017 list, but that’s the way it often goes; my trips are often planned quite spontaneously due to work opportunities, travel deals, and, well… life itself.

Sunset in Japan a few weeks ago

All to say, my 2018 travel goals are much the same. These are the places I’d LOVE to go next year, but there is no way in hell that I would ever have the time or the money to actually achieve the good majority of these travel goals. I’m a massive fan of dreaming big, however, so this list is going to be exactly that: a list of big, beautiful dreams.

Because why not, right?

Giraffe Manor Nairobi Kenya

I never could have predicted 2017 would see me staying at Giraffe Manor

In last year’s post of travel goals, I wrote:

Please note I tried to keep this at least slightly realistic, because as much as I’d like to spend the entire year sailing around the South Pacific, travelling across Central Asia, exploring Eastern Africa, and lazing away the days on every Caribbean island I can find, I see myself sticking relatively close to home unless an incredible opportunity arises (which, of course, I’m always open to). That, or I win the lottery and never have to work again.

Well 2017 was a shitty-ass year for a lot of people. It wasn’t my favourite year, either. So for this list… fuck it, I’m going all out. I’m dreaming of it all.

Without further ado, this is where I’d love to travel in 2018.

A lion in Kenya’s Maasai Mara

Namibia

There is so much to see and do on the continent of Africa; with 54 countries, it’s extremely difficult to narrow down just one country I really want to see, but Namibia tops the list. After a fantastic six weeks in East Africa this year I’m so keen to go on even more safaris. Not only that, I’ve heard time and time again from some of my well-travelled friends that Namibia is one of their very favourite countries. Here’s hoping I can make it a reality in 2018! Anyone want to join me on Helen’s tour to Namibia in August?!

West Africa

OK, so this is an incredibly broad region of countries, but I’d love to do a bit of travelling in this part of the world. Sierra Leone, Ghana, The Gambia, Nigeria… there are so many Western African countries that I’d love to visit that it’s difficult to even know where to start! My hope is that I can keep searching for affordable flights from Europe until something falls into place…

A view of Lucca, Italy, which I visited in September

The Balkans

Another extremely broad area, the Balkans – the exact countries of which is often disputed – is a region of Europe that I really haven’t seen very much of. I talked about doing this trip in 2017, too… and I’m pretty sure in 2016, and 2015, and 2014… but I’d really, really like 2018 to be the year I finally visit Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, and Macedonia. If all goes to plan I may actually be there in April and May! If not, I can guarantee you this will make 2019’s list. Hah.

Puglia, Italy

C’mon now, there was no chance Italy wouldn’t be on this list, as it showed up three times last year (and I actually accomplished two of the three Italian travel goals in 2017). I’m hoping to spend a while based in Italy in 2018 and, as I know the north quite well, it would be amazing to check out the south a little bit more. There are a few towns in the region of Puglia that I’ve spotted on Instagram that I’d absolutely love to visit.

I was so happy to see Toronto again in 2017

Western Canada

Being from Manitoba, a province in the Canadian prairies, I’m hoping to spend a lot more time exploring my home country in 2018! One of the dream trips would be to see British Columbia and Alberta again; I did a road trip through Western Canada ten years ago, but it’s high time I see it again. Going in winter (even though I don’t ski) would be ideal… all those snowcapped mountains and tall green pines! Toss in a visit to Vancouver to see my brother Kitt and this sounds like a dream holiday.

A road trip through the Southern half of the USA

I know that I’ll get to Phoenix, Arizona at least once in 2018 as my dad has a house there – he’s what we lovingly refer to as “snowbirds” in Canada, meaning he often flies south for the winter – and I’d love to incorporate a few trips around the USA if I can while in AZ, especially because I haven’t been to America since the summer of 2015. Right now I’m dreaming of New Mexico, but the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is also calling my name! I’d one day love to visit all 50 states – I’m about 14 short – so there’s definitely more time in the US in my future.

And while it’s not technically a southern state, I’m also dying to get back to California. If I could finally visit in San Francisco in 2018, I’d be a very happy woman.

From Sedona, Arizona in 2015

Buenos Aires, Argentina

I spent about three weeks in Buenos Aires in 2012, and for some reason I’ve had it on my mind a lot for the past few months. The absolute dream would be to spend a solid month or two there, rent a flat, and work from there (working online has its benefits, that’s for sure). While there I’d also like to fit in a trip to Paraguay – one of the four South American countries I haven’t seen yet – and perhaps even return to Brazil. While I’m at it, may as well throw in a trip to motherfucking Antarctica, because why not, and because IT IS MY NUMBER ONE DREAM.

Georgia and Armenia

Georgia is on every single one of my lists of travel goals, and for some reason it keeps eluding me. I must research flights to Tbilisi every month, but I’ve never found flights that made sense with my schedule. As I’m hoping to have a little bit more travel flexibility in the next year, I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll finally be able to visit these two countries, because I’ve heard incredible things!

Island paradise in Zanzibar with Helen

Island Hopping around East Africa

AS IF I could afford to visit the island nations of East Africa – Madagascar, the Seychelles, Comoros, and Mauritius – all in one go, but goddamn it, this is my dream list, and I’m going to just go for it. Dream big, isn’t that what I said?! I’ve heard that these islands are so diverse and so beautiful, and I’d absolutely love to spend some time on each of them.

New York City

OK, this one is slightly more achievable. I really hoped to revisit NYC in 2017, especially as one of my best friends Oneika is a resident, but time (and money) just got away from me this year. I’m actively working out when I can visit New York in 2018… and will hopefully squeeze in a side trip to Washington DC, too, as I’ve never been before!

A scuba diving trip in the Caribbean

This one also feels slightly more achievable, as I’m researching trips to the Caribbean all the time! I had a fantastic time in Antigua this year, and, after all of the natural disasters that so many Caribbean islands have faced in 2017, I’d really love to put my tourist dollars back into the region in 2018. As I haven’t been scuba diving in years, I’d love to make a diving trip a main priority.

Explore Central Asia

Yep, back to dreaming big. One day, I dream of exploring as much of Central Asia as I can overland; while I don’t have months to devote to this in 2018, I’m hoping I could swing even one new Central Asian country like Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan. I’m so fascinated by the history of these countries.

Give me that turquoise water again (in Zanzibar, Tanzania)

Sail around the islands of Oceania

Oh yeah, did I tell you I planned on winning the lottery in 2018 as well? While this could be a feasible trip at some point in my life, packing it on to all of these other trips is just downright laughable. I did say I was dreaming big, however, and the thought of exploring Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Nauru, and so many more islands would truly be a dream come true. C’mon now… Bora Bora?! Just the name itself makes me want to drop my entire savings account on a plane ticket…

Flying Over Doha, Qatar

As you can see, my “Travel Goals for 2018” is more like “Travel Goals for Life”, but I always love writing grand lists like this; I’ve done it since I was a little kid. I’ll never stop studying guidebooks and atlases, marking down all the places I hope to one day visit, dreaming as big as I possibly can. No matter what, even if I achieve absolutely none of these travel goals, I’m sure 2018 will still hold lots of adventure… because in the end, Antarctica and Bora Bora or not, adventure is what you make it.

Here’s to 2018!

Cheers to 2017, when I got to visit Cinque Terre again

All I can say is if you do an American Southwest tour, please, please, please don’t miss the national parks! Zion, Bryce, the Grand Canyon, etc are some of my favorite places in the world (my parents grew up in AZ and NM). If hiking isn’t really your thing at least get to Santa Fe, New Mexico for the turquoise jewelry (please only buy from certified native craftsmen to support the local tribes, there is a market in central Santa Fe with only these sellers) and the green chiles.

It would be a DREAM to do that Namibia tour! I’m seriously considering one of these tours next year because Africa has now made its way onto my very productive travel list. SE Asia (again) and Africa (again…whew!) will definitely happen in 2018.

What a great and diverse list. I have so many ideas now.

Oh, and I just skimmed the part about the Bourbon Trail! I lived in Lexington, KY for 3 years. Even though I’ve lived in London now for over a year and a half, Kentucky is absolutely brilliant. Lexington is still where I call home, though I was only there from when I was 25-28, and my heart is stuck there for so many reasons. If you do the Bourbon Trail, I have so many recommendations, but Lexington should be your hub! It’s home of my favorite coffee shop in the entire world, even though I’ve probably seen thousands across the world by this point. If you’re also into craft beer, the scene there is booming. Oh, and the picturesque rolling green hills with white picket fences surrounding flocks of horses at sunset? Guhhhh. Such a serene dream! Go during April or October to see the Keeneland horse races, which is such a fun tradition!

Stupidly affordable, too. Annnddd I could definitely hook you up with people in the bourbon industry to do the Bourbon Trail right! It made me so happy to see this on your list!

What an exciting list! I hope you will accomplish it and even more. 🙂 My friend recently did a trip to Georgia and Armenia and she said they have the friendliest cultures in the world! I’m also hoping to make it to the Balkans next year. In 2017 I made it to the capitals of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina but sadly didn’t have enough time to go further south. I did meet a lot of people who were hitchhiking through the Balkans, so I might give that a go!

Can’t wait to see which countries you make your home base in 2018. 🙂

Can’t wait to hear all about it! : ) so far I know I’m definitely going to have ten days in Ireland in February–a few solo days and a week traveling around with my cousin! I am also really really considering buying tickets to Australia (!!!) for late 2018. So excited for the possibility of that. I know work and family will have me doing some small trips around the northeastern US (NYC, DC, Maine) and I want to make lots of time for some New England beach/island weekends as well. And hey, in the spirit of a true wish list, let’s add in some more weekend trips–Vancouver! Austin! NOLA! *hyper dancing*

We have been travel dreaming too. But yesterday I put some of it into action! In May we move from Japan back to the US to properly store our belongings. And then we will spend June, July, August and September in the Balkans! After which we are taking a 23 day transatlantic repositioning cruise on the Italian line MSC to Miami. I just booked it last night! Merry Christmas to me!!! So excited for 2018. BTW, I have never, ever considered myself a cruise person, but for our family of 4 this was a good deal for essentially 23 days of room, board and transportation. So we’re gonna give it a go.

Dream big or go home – love it. Pacific Island hopping is right up on my dream list although I highly doubt it will happen in 2018 although I am optimistically looking forward to a Southern US Road Trip, heading to Indonesia for a month, returning to Thailand for ten days to eat all the mango sticky rice, getting married in Colorado and lots of hiking around Colorado and the South West, fitting in a week or two somewhere in Canada, road-tripping NZ for a month, and hopefully heading to Patagonia at the end of the year. Wish me luck!

“I’m going to make this list slightly realistic…”

*proceeds to make a list three people couldn’t cover in two years*

Hahaha.

But seriously, if you do the American South (we don’t call it that until you’re east of the Mississippi river, by the way) hit me up. I’m an expert in that region, having my roots there.

The Blue Ridge mountains are stunning, views for days.

Cumberland Island is reachable only by ferry, and contains old Carnegie ruins and scores of wild horses.

New Orleans speaks for itself, but many visiters from afar miss it for some reason.

Etc, etc. Happy travels!

Reply
Brenna Holeman December 24, 2017 - 10:34 pm

I’d argue that that list was realistic for me in 2017! I listed 17 countries (Italy three times) other than the joke “everything I wanted to do last year but missed” comment. In reality, I visited 16 countries (and Italy three times). Trips like Belgium and Iceland are much more realistic to do from London than, say, sailing the South Pacific, which is what I meant by the comment. Please keep in mind I travel for a living 😉

I didn’t necessarily mean a trip around the American South, rather the southern half of the US (those terms get tricky!) but thanks for the tips! I agree that NOLA is awesome, I was there a few years ago. Happy travels to you, too!

Honestly I love reading everything you write, even stuff like this! I love this enthusiasm. And hey, I even have some similar travel goals – I’m hoping to spend a few months hiking and hitchhiking through the Balkans in the summer, and I’d love to head to the Southern US too although Texas is highest on my list instead of AZ or NM. Hopefully you’ll make it to as many places as possible!

This list makes my head spin! What I don’t get is how you find all the time to research AND travel. The researching part sucks all of the energy right out of me. Too many choices! I’m terrified that now that I live somewhere amazing, from where I have the opportunity to relatively easily explore so many places, I’ll freeze up with indecision (it’s my biggest weakness) and miss out on everything. This is probably a big reason why solo travel never worked for me. I do much better when someone says, “Hey, I’ve planned this amazing trip. Do you want to come?” And then I do and I just go with the flow and mooch off of their research skills and it works out beautifully.

Anyway this list looks incredible. Of course I DO hope you make it to northern Italy at least once, but Puglia is a dream of mine too so I get it. I also think you should try to get to Campania. That Namibia trip!(!!!!) Wow. And so many others. I hope all of your travel dreams come true in 2018, if only for the selfish reason that I want to read about them! 🙂

Reply
Brenna Holeman December 30, 2017 - 10:05 pm

See, I absolutely love the research part, so that doesn’t feel like work at all to me! Whenever I’m bored or in a rut I just look up flights to random locations (try Skyscanner, the “everywhere” function is addictive). Then from there I start looking up accommodation, etc… and boom, three hours have passed.

I would LOVE to return to Bologna so I will definitely consider it and keep you posted! We can visit that giant food mall that opened up, AKA heaven on earth. x

I have so many thoughts! First, I have a list of my own that has been sitting in my drafts folder for over a year but that I recently dusted off and am hoping to publish in the next few weeks because it’s fun to dream and it makes life so much more enjoyable. Just this morning I was talking to my parents and brother about where they would like to visit in August, and I threw out the idea of Seattle and Vancouver. I’ve wanted to visit Vancouver for years, and friends of mine did a similar trip earlier this year and loved it. And finally, if your US trip next year affords the opportunity, please come visit Memphis! Not only would it be awesome to actually meet you after reading your blog for so many years, I genuinely think you would love it. There’s so much history here, between the music and the civil rights movement, and there will be a lot of commemorations in April as it will be 50 years since Dr King was assassinated. Not to mention the food is delicious, our oldest hotel is famous for its resident ducks, and we converted our Pyramid downtown into a giant Bass Pro Shop. Come to Memphis! 🙂 happy almost 2018! xxx

antartica is also my number one destination and since my hubby and i made a deal that we could each pick a two week once in a lifetime destination for our 50th bdays….he chose bora bora and i originally chose a safri including a hike up kilimanjaro. im rethinking that to go to antartica instead. it is crazy expensive ! like 22k! but….my biggest issues is the boat. i cant do boats. i get so sick and stay sick….we shall see as im 44 now and hubby just turned 47. takes a while to save for these types of trips lol.
the two central asian k’s are also a bucket list entry for me -they seem so unspoiled and remote and mysterious.
btw- everyone should dream big and in techni-colour! otherwise why bother?

Brenna Holeman December 30, 2017 - 10:09 pm

Yes – these trips are so pricey! That’s definitely my issue. I don’t have trouble on boats but then again, I’ve never sailed to Antarctica!! I hope that you have lots of exciting adventures coming up 😀

How weird is it to say that I read Buenos Aires and I got all excited thinking I might bump into you if you do come? Haha! Being a sports journalist (specialized in handball) all of my trips so far have been related to handball events. I just came back from the women’s World Championship in Germany. People at work asked me how much I liked Germany and I just couldn’t reply because even though I was there for two weeks, in four different cities, I only had time for a stroll in Hamburg! 😛 One of my travel goals for next year is to go to Budapest for another handball tournament! I attended the same tournament this year, but I haven’t had time to explore the city as I was busy covering the event that only lasts a weekend! Hopefully this time (if I manage to go!) I’ll spend a few more days to discover the city! Happy new year and may most of your travel goals come true! 🙂

Western Canada has become my sister & I’s default trip spot slowly but surely. When we inevitably lose the hiking lotteries for super popular hikes in Washington state (I mean I’m part of the transplant invasion…but let me win one of the lotteries *some day*), we’ve started going to Canada instead. 6 days in the backcountry of Banff is my favorite hike so far! Plus, the currency exchange means I’m always pleasantly surprised by my credit statement, and there’s SO MUCH to do. I’m actually headed to Vancouver Island tomorrow for New Year’s & planning a hike of the North Coast trail there next summer.

Also, I actually ended up talking to a couple from Winnipeg a few weeks ago and they told me even more about the Festival du Voyager that I remember you writing about. Makes me want to go even more now!

I love Vancouver and if I could get a working visa, I’d move there in a heartbeat. I went to visit friends in October and didn’t want to leave. Just sayin’, it’s super easy to swing through Seattle if you’re already in Vancouver! Also, I have a feeling you’d really like the town of Bellingham, WA, and some of the easier hikes around Mt. Baker in the North Cascades National Park. Or, catching a ferry from Victoria to Olympic National Park and checking out Hurricane Ridge. Looking forward to following your travels in 2018! 🙂

West Africa is definitely on my list for 2018! I’ve been going back and forth to Ghana for work for two years now, but have been terrible about getting out and exploring the rest of the region (except for a trip to Sao Tome – which is a short, cheap flight from Accra and should definitely be on your West Africa itinerary!) I’m hoping to be more intentional about scheduling vacation time on work trips this year.

Look forward to reading about wherever you make it to in 2018! Happy travels!

We just did a nine-day trip through southwest USA and hit up all the parks in Utah – get a van and drive yourself around, it’s so much fun. And Buenos Aires – I hope you get to go back there. And you’re so right that adventure IS what you make it. If I were to dream big, my top destinations for 2018 would be Ireland and Scotland, and I’d love to see more of England and France.

Oh and Italy! How could I forget Italy?! I’ve only been to Rome and I fell head over heels in love with it. I’d love to explore so much more of the country. Even after just seeing one city for a few days, I can totally see why you have an ongoing love affair with the country.

I’m super excited to explore Canada even more this year… I’ve seen a lot of it already, but years ago, and it’s high time I see even more! Your list of places sounds incredible, I hope you get to see everything you dream of and more. Thanks for the comment, Marie! 🙂

Love your list, Brenna!
I’ve been to Buenos Aires twice in the past year, its one of my favourite and its pretty affordable from Brazil. Maybe a third time in 2018?
In my list for this year is Australia (perhaps two months?), Chapada dos Veadeiros (an incredible place in Brazil) and Costa Rica.

If you happen to be in Brazil I would be sooooo happy to buy you a drink and show you around!!!

It’s funny, because this New Year’s I actually decided to dream big and set some goals for myself too, not travel goals, but life goals. I always have a hard time seeing into the future, even one year, and my lack of goals making has lead to me kind of blowing in the wind but not achieving so much. Here’s to big dreams for this year!
