Bulgarian Beaches

by Brenna Holeman

Varna, Bulgaria
My friend Kerrilyn and I spent a few glorious weeks together one summer, travelling by train and by bus through Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. After spending a week in Transylvania with Dracula, sunflower fields, and pizza, we stopped for a few days in Varna, a beach town located on the Black Sea. The memories I have of Varna are mostly subdued and relaxed: playing Uno on the hostel’s patio, ordering shopska salad in one of the beach’s restaurants, dozing on inflatable mattresses in the sun, swimming in the cool sea, buying old jewellery and cameras from a small antique shop. The beauty of travelling with your best friend, however, is that all of those things, as unobtrusive and mellow as they may seem, become the most wonderful things in the world.Every day I dream of travelling again.
